Why Public Parks Matter

In 2004 I had the good fortune of meeting a remarkable educator and civic leader, Professor Delores Handy of Temple University.  Delores was an expert in parks and recreation and had previously served as Commissioner of Recreation for the City of Philadelphia.  Her love and passion for public parks was contagious.  She helped me see the public park as the great equaliser and animator of the urban civic experience.  

Today we experienced the Millennium Park in Chicago.  With every step I thought of the late and great Professor Handy and how great visionaries such as Daniel  Burnham have created this animated environment that produced so much spontaneous joy and wonder. Come along with me into the park…
